Not Done Living: Gary’s Story

When Gary W. was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer during a dream road trip with his wife, everything changed. Tumors were found in both lungs, including a HER2-positive mutation. But today, Gary is thriving on Enhertu—a treatment originally developed for breast cancer—and continues to live a full and active life.

He walks daily, helps around the house, travels, and enjoys time with family. “I live very much like a normal person,” he says. His journey is a powerful reminder that lung cancer is not a dead end. With expanding treatment options and ongoing research, hope is real for stage 4 patients.

Gary’s message:
“I don’t ever want to stop living. I was determined not to let lung cancer slow me down—if anything, it’s accelerated me.”

Living Fully: Joanne’s Journey With Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

When Joanne received her non-small cell lung cancer diagnosis in 2021, she found herself asking, “Why me?” A healthy lifestyle didn’t shield her from an EGFR mutation—a genetic change often seen in never-smokers and light-smokers. After surgery and chemotherapy, she began targeted therapy tailored to her mutation.

Joanne realized that dwelling on blame only steals peace. Instead, she chooses gratitude, faith, and connection—with her husband, community, and support system. She believes lung cancer shouldn’t be viewed as an automatic death sentence or a condition defined by stigma. Her voice encourages compassion, understanding, and renewed hope.

26 Years Living With Stage 4 Lung Cancer: Wells’ Story

In 1998, Wells W. was told he had ten months to live. Instead, he became an advocate for his own care—researching treatments, seeking second opinions, and joining a compassionate use trial for Iressa (gefitinib), a targeted therapy aligned with his EGFR mutation. His tumors shrank enough for surgery, and he has continued to live cancer-managed ever since.

Now 91, Wells devotes his life to lung cancer advocacy. He co-founded GO2 for Lung Cancer and mentors newly diagnosed patients around the world. His remarkable journey proves that a stage 4 diagnosis does not eliminate the possibility of long-term survival.
